Summary: Secretary of the Air Force, Harole E. Talbott, personally carries the president's 1954 greeting to officers and airmen of Thule Air Force Base. Accompanied by Gen. Curtis LeMay, Commander of SAC (Strategic Air Command), Col. Bernt Balchen and the Arthur Godfrey Show, the Secretary flies from New York to the polar outpost. (Shot list to follow). Reel 1: 1) CU staff sergeant United States Air Force playing harmonica at Thule Air Force Base, Greenland. 1 January 1954. 2) CU a colonel talking over microphone, introduces Sec'y of the Air Force, Mr. Talbott. Mr. Talbott comes to microphone, gives a speech, Mr. Talbott finishes speech, Colonel steps forwad, starts to talk, he introduces Gen. LeMay. Gen. LeMay steps up to rostrum in front of microphone and begins speech. 3) CU Arthur Godfrey giving short talk over microphone; entertaining troops at Thule, has ivory tusk from some type animal in hand. Reel 2: 1) CU Arthur Godfrey standing on stage in front of microphone, invites singer, Jeanette Davis. 2) MS Int scene as the first hula North of the Artic Circle is performed by Haleloki, followed by song by Lu Ann Simms, Marion Marlowe and the MacGuire Sisters. 3) CU Arthur Godfrey on stage talking over microphone. He introduces Col. Balchen who gives speech and walks away from microphone, camera pans with him slightly, then comes back to the microphone and picks up Arthur Godfrey. Reel 3: 1) Series of shots; Arthur Godfrey and troupe entertain troops in hospital. 2) LS sign (night scene, cannot make out same). This reads AIR BASE GROUP. 3) LS INT auditorium filled with Air Force personnel at this January 1, 1954 celebration at Thule Air Force Base, Greenland. 4) MS Air Force Band playing on stage, one man playing harmonica in front of microphone. 5) CU Mr. Talbott talking over microphone. 6) CU a colonel. 7) CU Gen. LeMay talking over microphone. 8) CU a colonel presenting presents to Arthur Godfrey. 9) CU Arthur Godfrey unwrapping presents which are ivory tusks (from an unknown animal). 10) CU troops photographing same from auditorium. 11) CU Arthur Godfrey pouring a cup of coffee. 12) Several views of LeMay and Godfrey, Talbott and wife in office signing papers. 13) CU Talbott. 14) CU Godfrey. 15) MS Godfrey and wife walking toward aircraft. 16) (Night scene). Curtis Emerson LeMay (November 15, 1906 – October 1, 1990) was an American Air Force general who implemented an effective but controversial strategic bombing campaign in the Pacific theater of World War II. He later served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965. LeMay joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, the precursor to the U.S. Air Force, in 1929 while studying civil engineering at Ohio State University. Harold Elstner Talbott (b. 1888, Dayton, Ohio-d. 1957) was president Dayton Wright Airplane Company from 1916 to 1920 and served as an aviator in World War I. He was chairman of board of the North American Aviation Company in 1931 and 1932, then as director of aircraft production for the War Production Board in 1942 and 1943.
